The Heart of Fashion - Jeannie Mai

Can you imagine waiting until you are 36 years old and on national television before you actually hear your mother tell you, for the very first time, "I love you"?

This is exactly what I just witnessed on one of my favorite shows "How Do I Look?" on the Style Network.  Stay with me here - the title of the show does nothing to capture the beauty of the inward transformations and healing that occur on every episode.

Rather than simply critique someone's fashion sense, make her over into someone she is not, and then have the person inevitably return to her old ways, host Jeannie Mai helps her guests discover who they really are and how some of the ways that they present themselves outwardly are holding them back from growing.

Some guests are stuck in a decade that they remember being happy. They want to retain those memories by dressing as if, for example, it's still 1982.  This may be off-putting to potential employers, or their children may be embarrassed to have them show up at school.

Some guests wear very revealing, inappropriate clothes no matter where they go or what the occasion. This may make their spouse or relatives feel very uncomfortable. Often times, the guests will say that they do not believe that how they are dressing (presenting themselves to the world outwardly) has any real negative effect on their lives. This is where Jeannie Mai steps in.

Jeannie is a fashionista, but I think of her more as a "Life Stylist." She engages and befriends her guests during their journeys, and she prepares a social exercise for each of them, designed to open their eyes to how their choice of clothing affects others' perception of them and how this may be holding them back.

Jeannie Mai, from the hit show "How Do I Look?"

Guests will often reply (and I must admit, I shared this viewpoint until I watched my very first episode of "How Do I Look?"): "I don't care. If people want to judge me, that's their problem," but, the truth is, we live in a judgmental world.

People, including us, naturally make judgments all day long.

If you see a woman dressed in stilettos, a short leather miniskirt, and a brassiere at your child's daycare center, would you feel comfortable leaving your son or daughter in her care? The fact is, there are appropriate, socially accepted dress codes, and people trust people who "look the part."

After Jeannie takes the guest through an experiment, the guest almost always has her "a-ha" moment, and only then does she go on to try a variety of wardrobes and choose a hairstyle to compliment her new fashion. At the end of the show, the guest reveals her new look the world - but it doesn't end there.

Throughout the journey, Jeannie picks up on cues from her conversations with the participant. Perhaps a guest longs to finish school, pursue a new career, or travel. Jeannie closes by making the guest's dream come true. And, often, something positive happens, like a mother letting her know she is proud of her daughter and that she loves her.

If you have the opportunity, I encourage you, with an open mind, to check out the show. You may find that you are very touched by the guests' personal stories and the chance to witness their journeys and growth.

Your heart may also grow in compassion for that fashion misfit neighbor, coworker, or relative.  There are reasons why people present themselves to the world in the way that they do. This show will give you some honest insight into a myriad of reasons that will also allow your heart to grow for others and yourself.

The Mother of all MAC Giveaways!

Are you ready for this? I'm doing a grand prize winner, 2nd place, and 3rd place. This giveaway is so big, the 2nd place winner's prize makes other giveaways look bad!

This giveaway is to celebrate the amount of viewers I've had on youtube and on my blog. Once my blog hits 700 followers and my youtube hits 1500 subscribers, I will open this giveaway contest. For now, it is closed! However, I am so excited about it, I wanted to at least let you know what the prizes will be!

The prizes in this giveaway consist of my own personal and professional favorite products! There is nothing in this giveaway that I don't use on a regular basis. I handpicked all of these products because I personally love using them on myself and on each of my clients!

LC's Favorite Products GIVEAWAY!

3rd place winner will receive:

  1. Studio fix lash mascara (my FAV mascara!)
  2. "Bountiful" Plushglass (my favorite formula of gloss + one of my favorite colors!). The color is much more clear in person.

2nd place winner will receive:

  1. An eyeshadow quad filled with: dazzlelight (my go-to highlighter), ground brown (pro, a fabulous crease color that pairs well with any other color), fig 1 (matte plummy color i'm in love with!), and naval (a pro, matte navy color)
  2. Studio Fix Lash Mascara (my fav mascara!)
  3. "Bountiful" Plushglass (my fav formula of lipgloss, and one of my favorite colors!) the color goes on much more clear than in that picture.
  4. "Blushbaby" blush (this color goes with any look!! I use it on 90% of my clients, no joke!)

and last but definitely the best!!!

**drumroll**

The Grand Prize Winner will receive:

1.) 9 (NINE!) eyeshadows:
  • fig 1 (my favorite matte purple, it goes so well with so many colors)
  • parfait amour (my very first mac shadow, i'm a sucker for blue violets!)
  • texture (a great, very reddy-orange medium brown. A great crease color. Also a great brow color for red-heads!)
  • wedge (a great brow color for brunettes, also a great crease color)
  • naval (pro, a buttery smooth matte navy)
  • ground brown (pro, this brown pairs well with any color! just pop it right into the crease and bring it under the eye)
  • bottle green (pro, another great matte shade)
  • indian ink (pro, again, another great matte)
  • dazzlelight (one of my go-to highlights)
2.) Empty 15-pan palette to put all those shadows in!

3.) A brand new 224 brush! (my favorite favorite favorite blending brush!)

3.) Blacktrack Fluidline (my all time favorite eyeliner. Great to smudge it, also great to create a clean line. Also great for the waterline!)
4.) 263 brush (to apply the fluidline, of course!)

5.) Taupe Blush (my all time favorite contouring powder. This shade will work great on anyone that's super pale, up to about an nc40/nw35. If you win this and happen to be darker, please let me know and I will substitute with a darker contour shade :))
6.) Blushbaby Blush (this blush goes with ANYTHING! I use it on most of my clients, it just makes everyone look amazing!)
7.) Empty 6-pan blush palette

8.) Studio Fix Lash Mascara (love this mascara...love the brush the best. It makes it impossible to have clumpy lashes.)

9.)Careblends Oil (ok..I'm in love with this stuff. I mix it with almost all of my foundations for a more dewy look, I especially love mixing it with my studio finish concealer)

10.) Redhead Mineralize Skinfinish (this shade works on everyone with any color look you're doing)

11.) nc15/nw20 Chromagraphic Pencil (a great nude liner for your waterline)

12.) Pink Opal Pigment (one of my favorite shades of pigment because it's so incredibly versatile. It's a beautiful cheek highlight, as well as a lid color, or brow highlight. You can even dab a little of it overtop of your lip products)

13.) Bountiful plushglass (my favorite formula of lipgloss, it's not super sticky and it has a slight plumping to it)

14.) Nice & Spicy Pro Longwear Lip Pencil (I didn't pick these two lip products to go together, but I picked this lip pencil because it's so versatile. It's a long wearing color and will last for HOURS on you! See my blog post about these incredible liners)

All of these products are worth about $550!!!!! This is not a giveaway to take lightly in my opinion!

So get the word out! Once we reach 700 followers and 1500 youtube subscribers, we will open the giveaway and I'll post the rules!

goodnight!

xoxo LC

Adore Me Lingerie Giveaway Winner & Review

And the winner is....

Marina Moreno! Please email me to learn how to obtain your prize!

A few words about my experience with Adore me:

Adore Me is a website that customizes a showroom of lingerie based on a style quiz you take at the beginning of your session. For $39.95 a month, you receive 1 lingerie set per month of your choice.

A few notable things about this company: They have REAL live women who customize a showroom based on your quiz answers...it's not just some automated thing. Those same women are also available online to chat with you if you have ANY questions about sizing, style, etc.
Another thing to note is that they have friendly customer service, and their response time is quick.

I ordered this cute set on the right. It fits great although I wish the panties weren't cut as high waisted, because I like mine to sit ultra low. That's literally the only negative thing I can say about the entire experience I had with Adore Me. The set is just adorable, and you can really see the quality in the work when you receive yours in person.

Shipping time was very quick as well. I received mine 2-3 days after placing my order. It came wrapped up cute in a nice box with a ribbon. I took a picture, but then got a new phone so all of the pics of the packaging are gone :(

Lastly, there's no commitment. You may cancel your subscription at any time with no penalty. You also can choose to skip a month if you don't see anything that your eye is drawn to.

I hope you decide to give it a shot!
xo, Lauren

MAC Iris Apfel Lipstick Swatches & Some Comparisons

Aren't they beautifullll!?

Impassioned vs. Party Parrot
Their color is very similar, indeed. But their finish is much different with Impassioned being much more glossy than Party Parrot, which is a matte. Also, I find Party Parrot to be a lot more rich, even though that doesn't traslate in the photo above.

Scarlet Ibis's closest permanent dupe is Lady Danger, but it is slightly more matte than Lady Danger. Still worth owning both, in my opinion.
